The week in review : a $1.4 million “surprise”?

Perhaps the most interesting story on the Bergen County beat last week occurred Monday at the freeholder’s work session when the board learned it will be asked to budget $1.4 million-a-year for the next eight years to pay off a bond obligation on improvements to Overpeck County Park.

The news came as a surprise to some freeholders who questioned why something had not been done years earlier to offset the impact of the payments or if there were other sources to pay it.

Last week also was also a time devoted to campaign announcements and political appointments.

Former Freeholder Robert Hermansen declared himself a candidate for State Assembly in the 39th Legislative District seat currently held by the embattled Robert Schroeder.

And all three freeholders whose seats are up for election – Republicans Maura DeNicola, John Mitchell and John Felice – declared that they will run for a second three-year term.

Meanwhile, Republican County Chairman Bob Yudin disclosed that he will not reappoint Rosina Romano to the county Board of Elections. Instead he intends to nominate Jamie Sheehan-Willis, who held the job for 16 years prior to Romano’s appointment.

The week ended with speculation on who will be County Prosecutor. The term of John Molinelli, who has held the job for a decade, is about to expire. Molinelli, a Democrat, said he’s interested in continuing in the job, but that decision is up to Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, who indicated he has not yet decided on a nominee.

Quote of the Week:

“Any other surprises coming our way?”

-Freeholder John Mitchell’s question to County Administrator Ed Trawinski after learning that the freeholders will be asked to approve $1.4 million as the first of eight payments on a bond obligation for Overpeck County Park.
